Lately, I’ve been cracking back into old Dan Kennedy newsletters. He’s one of the most influential direct response marketers in the world of sales and marketing. Dan Kennedy was involved in taking Proactiv (the skincare brand) to where it is now, a billion dollar company. He’s also published tons of books and newsletters on direct response marketing. Here’s a one piece of advice I got from his newsletter: “The importance of being able to observe something in a situation unrelated to your business and creatively apply it to your business.” Think about that. How do most business owners market and promote their business? They usually copy and paste what others in their industry are doing. In other words, “marketing incest”. Because there’s no innovation involved. It ends up being the same products being marketed the same way. Also, most of the time the things they’re copying aren’t even proven to produce sales. It’s OK to model others… Russell Brunson teaches people to “Funnel Hack” which is a great idea... But you want to make sure you’re modelling businesses that’s actually working. Take ideas from businesses outside of your industry and reinvent the proven strategies for your own. For example, take the fitness and wellness industry. One of the best growth strategies that’s working for them is leveraging influencers. They'll find influencers with 1m+ followers. Then, they'll get them to review the product and tell their audience about how great it is. Now, you’re starting to see big tech companies following this way of marketing. Great marketers observe what’s working in other industries and reinvent the strategy inside their own niche. So if you’re looking to grab more attention in your marketplace and get ahead of your competition… Look around for top brands that are outside of your niche. Look at their headlines, content, and offer positioning. Buy their product and see what their upsells are. Then model their marketing strategy because it’s all about understanding how people behave and how they want to buy. In your corner, ~Kevin P.S. They see what their competition is doing and then think, “Hmm, maybe I should try that.” Turns into ‘marketing incest’ where everyone is saying the same thing to the same audience.
